The Manaia is represented by a stylized bird form and it is seen as a spiritual guardian. It shows the flight of the soul through life and beyond. I have always been fascinated by sweeping wings of a hawk when they swoop down on their prey. This carving is based on that idea and it is carved from antique elephant ivory.
